Senator Laura Kelly was elected to the Kansas Senate’s 18th District in November 2004. As a State Senator, Kelly serves as Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for recommending to the legislature an annual state budget that balances the needs of all state agencies.
During the 2007 legislative session, Kelly fought to reduce waiting lists presently existing for home health services for older Kansans and those with disabilities. She also helped amend the state budget to include funds for early childhood education and after school programs for Kansas public school children.
In addition to serving as Assistant Senate Minority Leader, Kelly is Ranking Member of the KPERS Select Committee and the Public Health and Welfare Committee. She is also a member of the Capital Improvements Subcommittee; the Joint Committee on Health Policy Oversight; the Joint Committee on Pensions, Investments, and Benefits; the Legislative Budget Committee; the Joint Committee on Economic Development; the Joint Committee on Home and Community Based Services; the Legislative Post Audit Committee; Judiciary; the Joint Committee on State Building Construction; the Health for All Kansans Steering Committee; the Capitol Area Plaza Authority; and the Math and Science Education Advisory Committee.
In 2006, she was appointed by Governor Kathleen Sebelius to serve on the Kansas Council on Travel and Tourism Board of Directors, which works to promote state attractions and improve the travel industry within Kansas. She has also been appointed by the governor to serve on the Kansas Children’s Cabinet; Kansas, Inc. Board of Directors; and on the Kansas Advisory Group on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
Senator Kelly has been actively involved in the Topeka community for many years. As a member of the Sunflower State Games Board of Directors, she helps oversee a statewide amateur sports festival held in Kansas each July. She also serves as a member of the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Family Service and Guidance Board of Directors, the Visit Topeka Board of Directors, and the CASA Advisory Board.
Prior to joining the Kansas Senate, Kelly spent 19 years as executive director for the non-profit Kansas Recreation and Park Association, where she helped advocate for the needs of parks and leisure service professionals.
