TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) — Governor Laura Kelly showed her support for legislation to help school bus drivers in the summer.
Teamsters Local 696 supports allowing bus drivers to qualify for unemployment when school is not in session. Lawmakers would need to approve it.
Bus driver Ray Alvarez said it would help retain safe and qualified bus drivers from year to year.
“We’re trying to keep the safe drivers coming back year in and year out, so that we can provide excellent customer service,” Alvarez said. “But when their money is down, they either have to look for another two month temporary job or Kansas Work Force Center sends them out someplace else.”
Senators Oletha Faust-Goudeau and Anthony Hensley also spoke in support of the legislation.
