Public Health Doctor files to challenge
Vicki Schmidt for 20th Senate District
TOPEKA – Candace Ayars, of Topeka, filed Monday with the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office for the Senate’s 20th District, which includes parts of Shawnee and Wabaunsee Counties. The seat is currently held by Republican Sen. Vicki Schmidt.
“The state of Kansas is broke, and on a pathway to destruction” said Ayars. “I don’t believe the current Legislature can turn our state around. Kansans need leaders with courage to take back our state and turn it around.”
Ayars holds a doctorate in community health. She is an online health education professor. As such, she is deeply concerned about the impact of the ongoing budget crisis, especially its impact on healthcare and education.
“Time and time again I have seen this administration and the majority party of the Kansas Legislature push through policies that are devastating our state, creating unnecessary burdens on hard working Kansas families, and hindering the future of Kansas children,” said Ayars. “That’s why I have decided to do something about it.”
Ayars is married to John Coleman, a Topeka business owner. They have two adult children and two grandchildren.
